A 3-way tailgate is a tailgate on a station wagon than can be opened in the following three ways:

  1. opened sideways like a door
  2. upwards
  3. downwards like a gate

The door and hinge mechanism of the 3-way tailgate is heavy and sturdy by design. In the late seventies, it was the most common station wagon tailgate arrangement and was less problematic than the retracting tailgate used in full size early seventies General Motors wagons.[citation needed]
