The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is located in Roorkee, a township in Uttarakhand, India. Instituted as Thomason college of Civil Engineering in year 1847 by British, it was rechristened as University of Roorkee in year 1949.[1] Prior to independence, it awarded the degrees of the University of Calcutta and the Allahabad University, to which it was successively affiliated, followed by its own diplomas. It was restructured in 1948 as the University of Roorkee, as the first engineering university of modern India.
Indian Institute of Technology RoorkeeThe oldest institute of technical education in Asia and the erstwhile British Empire to award its own degrees (as the College of Engineering, Guindy was not a degree granting institution since its inception in 1794), IIT Roorkee celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th year) anniversary in October 1996. On 21 September 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's seventh Indian Institute of Technology. The ordinance was converted into an act by the Parliament to make IIT Roorkee an "Institution of National Importance".[2]

IIT Roorkee offers a wide range of academic programmes. It runs eleven Under Graduate, five Integrated Dual Degree, three Integrated M.Tech.,three integrated M.Sc., sixty one Post Graduate and several Doctoral Programmes.[3] Along with the engineering courses, IIT Roorkee also offers a 2 year residential MBA program. The Department of Management Studies also offers PhD in various disciplines. Admission for these courses are through JMET, a centralized entrance examination for the MBA programs at various IITs. IIT Roorkee is also running an MCA programme. Typically, the MCA is a 3 year fulltime degree course consisting of six semesters. It covers various aspects of computing, accounting, finance, programming, design and managing networks and databases. Admission for this course is through JAM (joint admission test), a centralized examination for two-year MSc programmes at all IITs, Three-year MCA and M Tech in Applied Geology/ Applied Geophysics at IIT Roorkee, MSc-PhD Dual Degree in Physics at IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur. Prior to being converted into an IIT, the University selected students through an entrance exam, REE (Roorkee Entrance Exam) conducted on an All-India level. The selectivity of REE was close to 2%.[citation needed] The Institute continues the legacy by admitting students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted at various centers all over India. The Institute is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia exchanging students and senior scholars. HeritageThe College was established in year 1847 as the first engineering college in the British Empire.[4] The College was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. It was given the status of University by Act No. IX of 1948 of the United Province (Uttar Pradesh) in recognition of its performance, potential and keeping in view the needs of post-independent India. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the Charter in November 1949, elevating the erstwhile college to the First Engineering University of Independent India. Since its establishment, the University has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower, know-how and pursuit of research to the country. It ranks among the top technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. Before becoming an IIT, University of Roorkee was ranked 14th best in Asia by Asiaweek in 2000 (Behind only the IITs among Indian Universities and Institutes).[5] Timeline1842 Ganga canal construction begins 1847 Sir James Thomason proposes and NWP approves Engineering College on 25 November 1848 (1 January) Roorkee College starts functioning 1853 Sir James Thomason dies, renamed to Thomason College of Civil Engineering, Bengal Sappers and Miners move to Roorkee 1857 Entrance exam started 1861 Municipality of Roorkee established 1864 Affiliated to University of Calcutta 1871 Engineering students mess 1872 Football & Polo 1873 Hockey & Athletic meet 1877 Tennis 1878 Military section abolished 1880 Gymnasium 1890 Swimming 1893 Telegraphy Engg 1894 Affiliated to Allahabad University 1896 Dome clock presented by Sir Bir Shamsher Jung Bahadur of Nepal 1896 Electrical and Mechanical apprentices 1897 Civil/Electrical degrees extended to three years 1898 Electricity comes to the college 1901 Fortnightly tests replaced by term exams 1905 Affiliation to Allahabad University ends 1909 Electrification of the college completed 1910 Textile Engg 1913 First Alumni association, Thomason College Engineers Association 1919 TCEA collapses 1923 Elec/Mech Engg closed 1927 Withdrawal of guaranteed appointments (depression) 1931 College magazine Lion started 1941 RUAA 1943 Military Engg 1946 Elec/Mech restarted, renamed Thomason College 1947 CBRI 1948 Roorkee University act passed 1949 Thomason College gains university status, 100 year inauguration by Pandit Pant 1955 Lion renamed Alumni Journal, WRDTC 1956 Adarsh Bal Niketan, Student Aid Loan Fund 1957 Hobbies club, Architecture, Telecommunication Engg. 1958 Nehru honoured w/ D.Sc. 1959 Dr. Rajendra Prasad honored w/ D.Sc. 1960 Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics started, BE Courses increased to 4 years, consequently in 1963 no batch graduated 1961 First doctorate awarded 1962 The China war threw the BE courses out of gear. 1963 The centenary gate was remodeled, Commission for scientific and technical terminology set up to evolve Hindi technical terms (closed in 1967) 1963 Chemical Engineering Started. 1964 Humanities, Electronics & Communications 1964 The batch due to graduate in summer was accelerated to January and the batch of 1965 graduated in November 1964. 1966 Entrance exam results processed by computer, Dr. Zakir Hussain honoured with D. CampusWith its serene and lush green campus, IIT Roorkee offers a good environment for learning and research. The campus is spread in an area of 360 acres (1.5 km²).[7] Various departments and hostels have very impressive architectures and there is hardly any repetition of design in the entire campus. The institute offers a variety of recreational activities for professional development. IIT Roorkee also has a Saharanpur Campus of 25 acres (100,000 m2) which offers courses in Polymer Science, Process Engineering and Paper Technology.[8] Hostels(Bhawans)Most students at IIT Roorkee live in the hostels, where a large number of extracurricular activities complement the hectic academic routine. The campus has nine hostels, of which two (Sarojini and Kasturba) are exclusively occupied by girls. Hostels in IIT Roorkee may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students along with doctoral students. Students are assigned to hostels by the Institute Administration after their freshmen year. The hostels are named after eminent personalities of India and Britain during the Indian Freedom Struggle. The hostels are:
In addition to these hostels, there are four hostels for married students, doctoral students and foreign students:
Several new hostels are being constructed to accommodate an increasing intake of students. MessEach bhawan has its mess, which is run on the basis of tenders. Mess administration consists of a staff advisor and a chief advisor. Moreover a mess secretory, representative of students, is also in the body for decisions on various the mess-issues. Student lifeThe technical fest of IIT Roorkee is called "Cognizance", the cultural fest is called "Thomso"and the nature & hobbies fest is called SRISHTI. Also, 'Rave' is another cultural fest arranged by the students at the Saharanpur Campus. There are a annual magazine namely "LIONS" and two campus magazines brought out by the students of IITR namely "Watch Out" and "Kshitij". Also, the students at the Saharanpur Campus bring out a bi-annual campus magazine named 'Renaissance'. The institute also has a Student Affair Council (SAC), which is the apex students body dedicated to the service of students in the campus and acts as an interface between the administration and the students' community.
