List of Mexican state governors

State governments by party (as of 2006)

The United Mexican States (or Mexico) is a union of 31 thirty one States and one Federal District (the Mexican Federal District, or Distrito Federal (Mexico City), in a federal republic.

According to the 1917 Constitution, executive power in each of those states is deposited in a Governor (Gobernador), who is elected for a six-year term by direct, popular, secret universal suffrage. No Governor of any Mexican state can be reelected.

The Head of Government of the Federal District is not considered a governorship, but the position is included on this list of governors for the sake of completeness.

As of 2007, the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI) holds 17 governorships, the National Action Party (PAN) holds 8, and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) holds 6, including the Federal District (Mexico City). The state of Yucatán was governed by Patricio Patrón Laviada, who was postulated by an unusual coalition including the conservative PAN and the social democratic PRD.
