The Mumbai Monorail is a proposed monorail system for the city of Mumbai. It is being contracted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and it will be the first monorail in India.[1]
LinesThere are four lines proposed. The first two are 25 kilometres (16 mi) long.
Two lines 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) long are to be constructed after the first two open.
Additionally previously planned Mumbai Metro corridors are also being examined to be made as monorail corridors instead of Metro Rail by MMRDA due to dense and congested areas these corridors pass through, and monorail technology is thought to be more flexible to make its way in congested and dense areas. Current StatusThe two shortlisted companies by MMRDA are Bombardier Transportation, Reliance Energy in association with Hitachi Monorail, and Larsen and Toubro with Scomi Group of Malaysia. The winner will get a contract to build and operate the monorail until 2029. The developer for the estimated Rs 2,000 crore monorail project in India's financial capital will be decided on July 16 when MMRDA opens the financial bids.[2]. The monorail will have a top speed of 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph)and an average speed of 65 km/h.[1] The cost of setting up the monorail service is roughly Rs 85 crore per km. The capacity of the monorail is more than 500 with four coaches attached and more than 700 with six coaches attached to it. the ratio of sitting to standing people will be 4:1. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on August 13, 2008 cleared the notification for construction of the first monorail project passing through Jacob Circle, Wadala, Mahul via Chembur, paving the way for a feeder service to the existing suburban railway network. The urban development department would publish the notification in the media soon, said officials.
