Ponneri is located at 13°19′N 80°12′E / 13.32, 80.2[1]. It has an average elevation of 16 metres (52 feet).

As of 2001 India census[2], Ponneri had a population of 24,205. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Ponneri has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 66%. In Ponneri, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
