Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) is an engineering college in India. It is located in Andheri, a suburb of Mumbai. It is affiliated to Mumbai University and offer courses leading to graduate (Bachelor) and post-graduate (Master) degrees in Engineering. It is one of the most reputed engineering colleges in India and part of it (aided wing) is supported through the government.
HistorySPCE was founded in 1962 and inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. At the time, it was only the fourth Engineering Institute in the Bombay region after VJTI, UDCT and IIT Bombay. The college started with three disciplines of engineering - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Electronics and Computer Engineering were started in 1995 and Information Technology (IT) in 1998. These three courses were privately funded by the college management whereas the Civil, Mechanical and Electrical courses are provided funds by the government. Mumbai University recognized the college as two separate institutions - SPCE (Aided) offering Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering courses and SPCE (Unaided) offering Electronics, Computer Science and IT engineering courses now known as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT). The unaided section was formally separated from its parent college in 2005 and established as Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT). However, the day-to-day operations of the two institutions is often a joint effort as they share some common facilities. The students of the two colleges mingle freely in extracurricular activities. LocationThe college is located at Munshi Nagar, Andheri (West), Mumbai. The college shares the campus with Bhavan's College (offering courses in Arts, Science and Commerce), S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), Central Food Technological Research Institute, and two elementary and high schools namely Hansraj Morarji Public School , Rajhans Vidyalaya CBSE [1] and Baikabibai Balvatika, A H Wadia High School. The campus has a tennis court, a sports field, a bank extension, a post office, a lake and a botanical garden. A few government undertakings have their facilities here. CoursesThe college offers full time courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. These are four year courses leading to a Bachelor of Engineering conferred by Mumbai University. It also offers part time graduate courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering. These part time courses are run after regular hours, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. The timing enables working professionals to join these courses. Recently, the college has been granted permission to conduct PhD course in Civil engineering. Graduate CoursesEach department listed above offers courses in their respective disciplines towards a BE degree. Postgraduate Courses
Student BodiesThe Students' Council is the primary student representative body. The general secretary and the cultural secretary are mainly responsible for the smooth conduct of these activities. They work under the guidance of the Vice President (who is a professor). The sports secretaries of the council also organize various sports events during the academic year. Each stream has its own student body -
The college also has a student chapter of the IEEE. College MagazineSPCE has its own annual college magazine named 'Disha' (meaning direction). It includes reports on the activities that have taken place in SPCE throughout the year, as well as articles and photographs. External links
